Today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day; just like it is every year. It is a focal point in the movement for women’s rights, and yet it always manages to sneak up to us with no forewarning. It’s okay to forget, but global celebration is required in order to eradicate misogyny. So, highlighted here are the ways to observe the holiday for those of you who both want to avoid bigotry, but were too caught off-guard by a deluge of rhetoric from the “girlies’ and “she-E-O’s” to prepare anything in advance.
- If a stranger comes up to you and says “Happy International Women’s Day,” it is okay to respond with a small nod and continue on your way.
- If a friend comes up to you and says “Happy International Women’s Day,” the appropriate response is “Oh, I didn’t know that was today.” Speaking your truth can be feminist praxis.
- If a *woman* comes up to you and says “Happy International Women’s Day,” it is essential to cut her off and scream “Woman woman woman! Mommy, sister, auntie, female cousin! Policewomen, mailwomen, firewomen, female doctor, female teacher, female coder! Actress, waitress, heiress! Girlboss! I’m STILL with her!! Hillary 2024!!!”
These responses also translate to text or email. If you’re a real feminist she-ro, you’ll perform these lines as many times as you can today and, of course, they will be memorized by next year. Let’s all remember to use our voices for good.
