On Changing

I’ve been in college for two months, and I’m already a totally different person. While I was a mellow, reserved homebody in high school, I have now become a wild, defiant party animal.

Most of the cool kids in high school go into college having already done it all. They’ve been to parties that involve the police (in the end), dated bad boys, maybe have even broken a law or two. I, on the other hand, am a late bloomer on the typical high schooler agenda.

When I first came to Brown, I had assumed everyone’s past was similar: study, win awards, volunteer…rebellion was not one of the criteria I had anticipated for transitioning into a college student. So, you can expect me to be surprised that some of the people I’ve met HAVE partied hard, had relationship experience and somehow still managed to keep grades at a maximum high.

In high school, the most rebellious act I had committed was driving to Target without telling my parents. It was an emergency, as I really needed cereal and kombucha. I even dared to drive to the library next door, where I didn’t only study, but checked my email, as well. Now, everything has changed. I’ve been to a club that lets you in if you are 18 and older, which was fun because the only club I had been to in high school was Spanish Club. I have also tried a sip of blue raspberry flavored Svedka, but I don’t understand why people would willingly drink cough medicine. I mean, drinking may not seem like a revolutionary act, but I don’t think I had even seen an alcohol bottle in high school! Although I have yet to break a law, I have snuck apples out of the Ratty, without getting caught (sorry, Gail). To me, this is the equivalent of running a bank robbery operation.

Also, in high school, I had a very crazy dream about a cute guy at my church, which was the closest I’ve come to having a relationship. Now, I still don’t have a boyfriend, but I do have a few friends that are boys.

Anyway, college is full of life changes: from having your own room to worrying that your roommate will walk in on you changing, from having your pets to cuddle with to only having your pillows to cuddle with, from not drinking alcohol to drinking nasty blue raspberry Svedka, and many more changes. But it’s great, because you become more independent, bold, and fun! Or not. Maybe you’ll become a hermit or a druggie. After all, college is full of surprises.
