A Freshman’s Thoughts on Spring Weekend

The fact that there were only 20 out of 50 students in my Monday morning class proved that it was the day after Spring Weekend. My body still aches as if I had run a marathon – okay, a mile – but seriously, it pains me to walk. Since it is a beloved Brown tradition, I endured all of Spring Weekend and have managed to come out of it with one minor injury: a bruise (on my right butt cheek) the size of an abnormally large potato chip that gives you a minute ounce of joy when you pull it out of the bag.

With the weekend in the past, I would now like to take the time to give this freshman’s review on her first Spring Weekend at Brown.

As this was my first multiple-day concert, I was pumped for Day 1. And since this was my first multiple-day concert I might have gone a little too “Hard in Da Paint” as Mr. Flame would put it. Despite that fact, I did make it to the first act of the concert – Yeasayer. I’m sorry to all Yeasayer fans, I just don’t get it. I would say more about the act, but I just wasn’t really paying attention. However, I was so excited when Waka came on, but to my dismay, when I went to turn to scream in excitement with my friends, I realized all were gone except for one. Stuck in the mosh pit with a dead phone, I clung to my last lingering friend for dear life repeating, “I cannot lose you! Do you understand the importance of this statement?”

During Waka’s whole set, I was ready to belt out the two lines I know from “No Hands,” but he didn’t even perform that. I was kind of upset Waka played me like that. The highlight of his performance, though, was when he sprayed me and the rest of the crowd with the remnants of his water bottle – so does that mean I, and a multitude of others, have indirectly made out with Waka?! I kept waiting for Hudson Mohawke to come on after, but I realized that as I had been waiting, he had already been performing. Luckily, I found two of my friends who were ready to leave. So instead of waiting to be enraptured with HudMo’s hit “Higher Ground,” I reached an even better high from the food coma I got from my gyro and Nutella milkshake combo from the Better Burger Company.

Greeted by a pounding headache and severe cottonmouth in the morning, I was less enthusiastic about Day 2. Since the concert started earlier, so did the pre-concert festivities. If I learned anything this weekend, it’s that I now know to despise the phrase, “We have to rally.” But I managed to do so, despite my exhaustion. And I am so glad I did. Kelela killed it! I never listened to her before, but I loved her whole performance. She was just so genuinely happy to perform at Brown. Plus, she is a fellow Maryland native – shout out to the DMV (to clarify: I do not mean the place where you get your drivers license. It stands for DC, Maryland, and Virginia). After her performance, I went to get sustenance from the pizza vendor – I still need to know where this pizza is from, it might have been the best I have ever eaten – to prepare for Pusha T.

Again, not knowing much of his music, I thoroughly enjoyed his performance, maybe because I danced the whole time like my life depended on it. My friends and I then planted ourselves in the grass for a mid performance break, but honestly I did not feel like standing up for Modest Mouse. Since they were the headliners, I felt I needed to stand more out of obligation than actual desire. I should have stayed sitting. My tummy started hurting and I couldn’t dance to any of their songs. They waited for their encore to do “Float On.” I couldn’t last. Fratty at the Ratty was calling my name. So again, I left early from the concert.

Binder was the perfect way to end the weekend. I was able to just lie in the grass amongst a crowd of both completely wasted and sober people and listen to songs my father used to sing to me when I was little. This was followed up with some much needed time in my bed while I picked out the best photo from the weekend to Instagram as my way signify the official end of Spring Weekend.

In all honesty, I am so glad the weekend is over. The thought of doing it all over again makes me want to crawl in my bed and never leave. When asking my friends about their first Spring Weekend experiences, they all felt the same way – it was enjoyable, but exhausting. At least I wasn’t accused on Monday of accosting a kid from my Spanish class at the Friday concert like a friend of mine supposedly did. I guess everyone had different and unique experiences. Now, it’s back to the grind before school’s done and I’m a sophomore. With all my newfound knowledge from my first year at college, I can prepare future freshmen for the best weekend at Brown.

are not understanding anything fully, except this post
    offers nice understanding even.
